How was science used in the design of your product? Model of a part of your product using math or science. What assumptions are made in this model? How close is the model to actual functioning of the product?
Chemistry:
The majority of the product is made from Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, also known as ABS. ABS is made from three monomers: styrene, acrylonitrile, and polybutadiene. When styrene and acrylonitrile are combined in the presence of polybutadiene, ABS is formed. Through this process, the outer shell of the product, and certain pieces, like gears were created.
Physics:
For the product to actually function, an input of electrical energy is required. That electrical energy enters the product through a polarized plug. The energy flows up to the motor. The energy is not actually put to use until the limit switch has been activated and the circuit is complete. From this point, the electrical energy is translated to mechanical energy as the gears begin to spin. The gear that is attached to the motor spins at a high rate, which would not be ideal for the function of the ice shaver. To compensate, gear ratio has been set in a way that creates a lower angular velocity for the output gear that shaves the ice.
Assumptions and Function:
With this model, a designer would have to assume that the electricity would flow properly through the path set by the machine. They would also have to assume that the motor would properly transform the electrical energy to mechanical energy. The main assumption in the model of the product was that the gears would create enough torque to properly shave the ice.
The model encompasses most of the functioning of the actual product. It accounts for the energy it takes to run the product and for how the product will shave the ice. The exclusions from the model include the outer casing, which would house the model and position everything to function properly.
